Mossy Lawns

Very often we see people struggling with their lawns. Moss is the most common cause of lawn anxiety. There is no simple solution to a mossy lawn: it’s partly down to the soil pH meaning that the problem will usually persist even if you throw endless amounts of chemicals at it. Scarifying with a big heavy industrial scarifying machine every two years usually does the trick. The little domestic ones don’t lift all the moss so it can quickly recolonise. Our machine will lift years of thatched moss growth and other plant detritus stripping the whole lawn right back to bare earth. The remnants of the grass plants are left just below the surface and immediately put out new shoots so there is no need to replant. Any addition of chemicals after that will be far more effective after proper scarification.

Wildflower lawns

A wildflower lawn or meadow can be tricky to establish. People think you can just throw a bag of seed down anywhere and hey presto you have a glorious display of flowers. But often you end up with very little and then those familiar native weeds take over: nettles, thistles, brambles, docken. So, a sustainable, successful wildflower area must be planned and implemented properly. Any preparation of the area must be carefully done, any perennial weeds should be eradicated. Seeds all have slightly different germination conditions that must be met so it may be an ongoing process. Some take a season or two to develop into flowers. It can be a tricky project, but your space will be far more attractive to insects, birds, and other fauna as they will now have a far more inviting and interesting garden to hang out in.

Wildflower lawns

Whether your grass is 3 feet tall or your croquet lawn needs manicured to 6mm we can handle it. We can repair a mossy or patchy lawn, install fresh turf, seed grass and wildflower meadows, we can also lay artificial grass.

Lawns can be repaired using a variety of treatments: scarification involves raking to remove weeds and moss, also removing dead grass to prevent patching. We can apply fertiliser and moss inhibitors and also have selective herbicides that won’t kill grass but will kill invasive broad-leaved plants like plantain and daisies. Another tonic for lawn health is top dressing, a compost and fertiliser mix, which is a routine treatment to nourish any lawn.

Drainage

Lawns can frequently suffer from poor drainage in wet weather. This can often be caused by a very clay rich soil. This can be partially alleviated by aeration using a garden fork, or hollow-tine aeration which involves removal of small soil cores with a machine and brushing in sharp sand to create space for water to lie below the surface.

We can also install extensive drainage systems involving a network of ditches containing flexible perforated plastic piping surrounded by pea gravel and wrapped in membrane which is then covered in turf. This system will remove large quantities of water from problem areas to a central drainage point. A field drain is a large sump dug into a water-logged area which allows temporary flood water to be redirected.

Customer Feedback

A great day’s work from Edinburgh Gardeners, cutting back and reshaping overgrown trees in our garden. The guys did an excellent job and tidied everything up at the end so my garden now looks much readier for spring!
